Psorisis cannot be prevented, but certain precautions and care can
help keep the number of flare-ups of the condition in check. These
precautions include:
• Keeping the skin moist. In psoriasis skin tends to get dry due to
accelerated cell growth. By keeping the skin moist, patients can
avoid itchiness and plaque causing dryness as well as loose plaque.
• Avoid cold and dry climates that can worsen symptoms and increase
the silvery scales of dry skin. Psoriasis needs hot, humid weather
and lot of sunlight.
• Skin should not be scratched and cuts or scrapes should be
avoided. Any kind of injury can lead to a psoriatic flare-up on any
part of the body. Special care should be taken while trimming nails.
• Stress and anxiety should be kept at bay as these can cause sudden
flare-ups
• Infections such as strep throat are one of the root causes of
Psorisis and should be kept under control, especially in children
• Certain medicines such as beta-blockers and lithium can increase
psoritic symptoms and increase the amount of loose skin on the body.
Make sure you mention your Psorisis to your doctor
• Alcohol consumption should be kept strictly under control,
especially by men as too much alcohol can cause flare-ups and spread
the disease further
• Smoking can also lead to psoriasis or make it worse. It can also
make symptoms last longer and make medicines less effective and so
should be avoided at all costs.
While Psorisis is a chronic condition which cannot be prevented, it
can be controlled by taking a few precautions. Once under control,
it is easier to treat and subsequently cure the disease.
