| Treatment for Psoriasis |
There are many different treatments available; based on individual
conditions and psoriasis type, the treatment should be determined by
the treating physician. Most of the time, the treatment also depends
on the type of disease, its severity and the body parts affected.
Among the various methods through which Psorisis can be treated are
included:
Home Treatment: General skin care at home can help treat psoriasis.
This includes keeping the skin moist, taking regular baths and
showers, softening and removing crusts by applying cream and gently
peeling off the crusts. Another home remedy for psoriasis is the
application of tars, which soften the crusts and allow them to be
removed.
Exams and Tests: There are no special tests required for psorisis.
Doctors often recognize the condition by the appearance and location
of patches on the skin. Another option is to send a small patch of
skin for a lab analysis. The only test is for psoriatic arthritis
which can be detected by X-rays.
Surgery: Surgery is generally not advised for Psorisis except for
nail psoriasis, which can cause fingernails and toe nails to become
severely disfigured and damaged.
Medication: This is generally the best treatment for Psorisis. There
are a number of medicines available for treating psoriasis including
topical creams and ointments like anthralin and tazarotene. Tar is
also commonly used for treating psoriasis. Many of these creams and
ointments need to be used with sunlight or ultraviolet light through
a process called phototherapy.
Topical applications soften the crusts and plaques and allow other
medicines to be absorbed by the skin. For Psorisis of the scalp,
there are special treatments available that help clear the flaked
skin. Such treatments often include tar shampoos, corticosteroid
solutions, or zinc and selenium sulfide shampoos.
Other Treatments: Occlusion therapy is another treatment method that
utilizes moisturizers or medicated creams to keep the skin moist.
Affected areas are covered by tape, cloth or plastic after
application of the creams and moisturizers to retain moisture in the
skin. However, occlusion therapy is not advised for large areas of
skin as it can cause thinning of the skin.
Certain other herbs, vitamins and diets also help relieve Psorisis.
Climatotherapy using natural sunlight and seawater has also been
found to help psoriasis in certain patients.
